Estonia's position on the pipeline Nord Stream in its economic zone of the Baltic Sea has not changed over time, and the country continues to oppose the construction of this pipeline. This in an interview with radio station Ekho Moskvy said Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet.

According to him, the reason for this position due to concerns for the environmental condition of the region.

In general, our position has not changed. And our position is that we are still in position, that the Baltic Sea - is not the proper place for such a large building. So our main problem, nevertheless, linked to environment , - he said.

He reported that, according to experts, with a maximum depth of the Baltic Sea in 80 meters have already died 30% of its flora and fauna, and in case of an accident the pipeline will need 35 years to replace all the water in the Baltic Sea.

So this is a very long process, if something happens. And to build more than a thousand kilometers of a major infrastructure in the sea - it is a big job. And the risks remain high, - said the minister.

U. Paet also expressed surprise why it was impossible to design a pipeline on land, where there are still also very large pipe between Russia and Europe.

Help. gas pipeline Nord Stream (North Stream) would connect Russia and the European Union via the Baltic Sea from Vyborg to Greifswald (Germany). Draft implementing Gazprom and German companies E. ON and BASF.

for the construction of the pipeline requires the consent of the five countries through whose waters it will pass - Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Against the project by a number of countries in the Baltic region, including Estonia and Lithuania, citing the potential threat to the environment.

As expected, the first string of Nord Stream capacity of 27 million tons of gas per year will be built by 2011, and the second a similar capacity - by 2012.
